Sorry, I thought MKBT was a basic DOS program..
It may be but it's not a BASIC DOS program 8^)
The "basic" in this newsgroup's name refers to the
BASIC (Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code)
programming language, not basic as in fundamental.

Willard,
people are just being pedantic.

This group, strictly speaking, is for queries relating to programs written in the
BASIC programming language, and that originally ran under the DOS operating system.

So, it's not "BASIC DOS" as in "dos is a very basic operating system", but rather as
in "programs written in BASIC and run under DOS"

Though, you will not hear anyone complaining if someone comes with a query about a
BASIC program they are trying to run under the 2K or XP platforms.

About your original query; MKBT.exe is a third-party Win32 program that runs on
the Window's 95 / 98 / ME / NT4 / 2000 / XP platforms and works with both FAT and
NTFS

It does not work with pure DOS!! - "Win32" means it will *only* run under Windows.

I don't believe that it will work with cd-rom s as they don't use the same method to
make themselves bootable.

A bootable cd-rom uses a boot "image" (an "image" of a floppy disk) and uses the
bootsector of the floppy to boot from.

You would need to extract the original boot "image" from the cd-rom.

Then you can manipulate the bootsector and generally edit the image in the same way
as any other floppy disk image, before returning the image (building) [to] the cd-rom
again.

*NB If all you wanted to do was make a bootable cd-rom that boots to DOS and has all
your DOS utilities on it (5Mb?), then you should download the following program[s]

CDRTools Frontend (to create and burn bootable cd-rom s)
http://www.4shared.com/file/165028806/fcd1d71/cdrtfe-13pre2.html

WinImage (to create your bootable floppy image you need to make the cd-rom bootable)

ABTW... You may also be interested in another [free] program - Microsoft Virtual
PC - that enables you to run a simulation of a PC through boot-up and running various
platforms (inc. DOS).

So, by using these three programs (CDRTools, WinImage and M$-VPC) you could create
bootable floppy disk[s] (images) and test them first, without writing to an actual
floppy disk. Then use the floppy disk image to create a [bootable] cd-rom image and
test that (on M$-VPC), again, without burning an actual cd-rom.

And, when you are happy that your cd-rom image is working exactly the way you want it
to - *then* you can burn the final image to a writable cd...

Microsoft Virtual PC is available to download from the link below :
